Age: Late 30s - canon never specifies
Canon: Darkwing Duck (1991)
Canon Point: End of series (E91: Malice's Restaurant)
Character Information: Disney Wikia Article
Personality:
The first thing anyone will notice about Darkwing is that he's fantastic - and they notice because he tells them so. Darkwing's ego is, at times, much larger than his sense of heroism, and it's been a constant source of trouble, as he regularly bites off more than he can chew. However, whenever anyone or anything deals a blow to his self esteem, it hits him hard. In this respect, he's almost bipolar: wallowing in self-pity and pessimism until he gets the kick in the tailfeathers that he needs, which usually sets him into overdrive, as though he's making up for the time he lost moping around. (In one episode, when someone asks if he's crazy, he responds with "a little manic-depressive on the weekends, but who's counting", which coming from a 90s cartoon, is a bit telling and a pretty good insight.)
If that weren't enough of a clue, it bears saying that DW's a big fan of melodrama, even when he's in a good mood. He's turned flashy entrances and grandiose speeches into his own personal trademark, and is very fond of providing his own narration. To paraphrase Austin Powers, he has no internal monologue. Part of it stems from his ego and the need to be a perpetual attention magnet, but it's also just plain fun ... which also speaks to his occasional immaturity, and his originality.
In some ways, Darkwing just refuses to grow up: he's the one usually found saying "gimme the shiny thing" or "but I was here first". He's not above mocking or sassing people - even if it usually comes back to haunt him later. He'll also put off necessary duties on occasion to rot his brain with a video game or two.
At first, he won't work well with others: by and large, his default nature is to be selfish and self-centered... it goes hand in hand with the ego. At first he can come across as close-minded, but it won't take too much poking and prodding from a teammate to show him he's wrong. Once things are explained - or his way proves to be completely ineffectual - he'll lighten up and start cooperating. Sometimes he'll even go so far as to change his tack and not only play nice, but use his skills as a strategist to make sure that everyone he works with gets to use their own strengths to their maximum potential. In other words, he'd lead a team very well, but only if forced to. Otherwise it's just too much of a headache.
When it gets right down to the wire, though, DW gets things done, and he does them his way - to hell with the system, doing it "by the book", or sticking to a plan. He can MacGuyver gadgets together or fix broken things with relative ease, and is knowledgeable about just about anything that would count as a crime-fighting gadget, up to and including chemistry and a small amount of computer programming. Even with all his know-how, he's often at his best after a plan has gone to heck: let's call it the "90% Fail, 10% Badass" rule. Between ego, bravado, a hair-trigger temper, and just plain bad luck, the odds usually stack up until DW utters three infamous words: "Let's get dangerous" ... which is pretty much the sign that he's had all he can take, all bets are off, and whatever's in his way is going down. He very rarely practices what he preaches, but at the heart of things, Darkwing is determined to do right by the people he protects, no matter what. Whether it's a classic case of "fighting the system", a scheme that looks impossible to beat, or a situation that looks inescapably dire, he'll do whatever it takes to see that justice is served.
That personal credo he's made to the public at large goes tenfold for those that Darkwing considers family - especially since he's VERY careful about who knows his secret identity. He doesn't want to see his friends or loved ones endangered for his sake, and if that happens, whoever's responsible will always have hell to pay. Once he realizes that the concept of a secret identity might be right out the window in Ryslig, he'll definiely have some thinking to do, because he considers that duality a very necessary part of his life. In fact, one might be so bold as to suggest that Darkwing Duck is a stronger personality than Drake Mallard. As Darkwing Duck, he has far more confidence and experience - fighting crime and keeping secrets is what he has known and done best for most of his life. The Drake Mallard persona seemed to only become necessary once he adopted his daughter, so on it hang all of his parental insecurities, his social faux pas, and his fumblings with "playing normal" for the suburbanite crowd.
But over the course of figuring out who Drake Mallard is, Darkwing has discovered his sentimental side - most of the time, this crops up in reference to Gosalyn, though he's been known to get choked up over other things, as well; usually anything that stirs some sort of nostalgia. He doesn't seem to speak much about his immediate family: canon only mentions great-great aunts or ancient ancestors - so his discomfort with intimacy and emotional expression were likely a product of how he grew up. (Like so many things, There's a Headcanon For That.) He's just as careful with who he becomes emotional around as who he shares his secret identity with: probably because he considers those two things one and the same. In a tough world, it's better to let people think you're a brash, bold hero with a big mouth and the wherewithal to get things done than a sentimental softie who'd lay down everything he had to protect one little redheaded girl.
